The Canada parents and grandparents program 2022 is for non-Québec Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents so they can become permanent residents of Canada.

Recently, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced that it had issued 23,100 invitations.

Out of the potential 182,113 sponsors in the pool, IRCC only extended invitations to those who submitted interest forms in 2020.

Around 15,000 people are anticipated to submit finished applications from the invitations which were sent out between October 12th and 20th.

If you want to apply, you have 60 days from receiving the invitation to submit a complete application.

The invitations to sponsor were sent to the provided email address on the interest to sponsor form. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) advised potential sponsors that they should check their junk and spam folders.

If an invite could not be sent electronically, it was instead mailed to the provided physical address.

Check the IRCC website to see if you were invited to be a sponsor, by entering your confirmation number. The confirmation tool will notify you if you were invited or not. If you have not received an invitation, you can request a copy.

Process

The parents and grandparents program requires that 2 applications be submitted if you were invited to apply:

  • sponsorship application and
  • permanent residence application

If your applications are both approved, you and the person you’re sponsoring will sign an agreement called an undertaking. This agreement starts on the day they become a permanent resident of Canada.

Are you eligible to sponsor your parent or grandparent?

You can sponsor your own parents and grandparents if:

  • you are invited to apply
  • you are a minimum of 18 years old
  • you live in Canada
  • you are a Canadian citizen, a Canadian permanent resident, or a person registered in Canada as an Indian under the Canadian Indian Act
  • you can provide a proof of income to show that you have enough money to support the people you want to sponsor. If you're married or in a common-law relationship, your partner can co-sign to combine both of your incomes
  • you meet all other requirements under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations

If your applications are both approved, you and the person you’re sponsoring will sign an agreement called an undertaking. This agreement starts on the day they become a permanent resident of Canada.

Who can you sponsor?

You can sponsor your biological or adoptive parents and grandparents. If you’re sponsoring your divorced parents or grandparents, and they have a current spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner, then these people become dependent on the application. This means that if approved, you can immigrate to Canada with your parents and grandparents.

You can also include dependent children.

Before you can sponsor someone, you must ensure that you meet the minimum necessary income requirements for not only yourself but also their dependents (spouse, partner, and children).

If you’re not invited to apply

Parents and grandparents may be able to apply for a super visa to come to Canada, which would let them stay here for five years maximum per visit.

Parents and grandparents who visit Canada on a super visa can also apply for 2-year extensions to their stay while they are still in the country.

Conclusion

If you submitted your interest to sponsor form in 2020 and were invited to apply for the 2022 intake, you can now sponsor your parents and grandparents for permanent residency in Canada. IRCC will send invitations by email- be sure to check your spam folder!

It is also a good idea to take a look at the Parent and grandparent super visa program, which could be a temporary option. The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that allows parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens or permanent residents to enter Canada multiple times, for up to 10 years.
