How Does the Application Process Work?

Applicants to the International Experience Canada program must first submit their profiles into country-specific IEC pools, similar to the Express Entry system used for Canadian immigration. Each participating country has its own pool for each stream of the program. IRCC periodically selects candidates from these pools and issues Invitations to Apply (ITA) for a Canadian work permit.

There are three main streams under the IEC program:

What Happens After You Receive an Invitation to Apply?

Once an applicant receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA), they have 20 days to submit a complete work permit application through their IRCC online account. Participants must ensure that they submit all the required documents, such as proof of job offers (for specific streams), health insurance, and other supporting materials within this time frame.

Arrival in Canada: What You Need to Know

After successfully applying and receiving their work permit, IEC participants must come prepared when they enter Canada. Upon arrival, they will need to present their passport and a Port of Entry (POE) Letter to Canadian immigration officers. In some cases, participants may also need to provide proof of the following:

  • Sufficient Funds: IRCC advises that participants show a bank statement with at least $2,500 to cover initial living expenses for the first three months. The bank statement should be dated no more than one week before departure.
  • Valid Health Insurance: Proof of health insurance covering the entire duration of their stay in Canada is required.
  • Return Ticket or Proof of Funds for a Ticket: Participants must either have a return ticket or show they have sufficient funds to purchase one.
  • Failure to provide these documents may lead to delays or issues upon entering Canada. Additionally, IRCC recommends participants keep digital and paper copies of all relevant documentation during their travels.
