Time is running out for those planning to apply for the 2024 International Experience Canada (IEC) program, with the application pool closing on October 21. This program offers a unique opportunity for international youth to live and work in Canada temporarily, while Canadian citizens can also apply to work abroad under Youth Mobility Agreements.
The International Experience Canada program is facilitated by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) and has garnered immense popularity over the years. For the 2024 season, the target intake is set at 90,000 applications. With the deadline fast approaching, aspiring applicants are encouraged to complete their submissions promptly to secure their spot.
What is the International Experience Canada Program?
The International Experience Canada (IEC) program provides youth from over 30 participating countries the opportunity to explore Canada while gaining valuable professional experience. Participants can work and live in Canada on a temporary basis, benefiting from Youth Mobility Agreements between their country and Canada. The program is primarily aimed at individuals aged 18 to 35 (with some countries capping the age at 30), offering them a pathway to experience Canadian culture and build their careers.
In addition to welcoming foreign participants, the IEC also allows Canadian citizens to apply for similar work and travel experiences abroad in participating countries.
How Does the Application Process Work?
Applicants to the International Experience Canada program must first submit their profiles into country-specific IEC pools, similar to the Express Entry system used for Canadian immigration. Each participating country has its own pool for each stream of the program. IRCC periodically selects candidates from these pools and issues Invitations to Apply (ITA) for a Canadian work permit.
There are three main streams under the IEC program:
1. International Co-op (Internship)
This stream is designed for students who have already secured an internship with a Canadian company. Participants must arrange their internship placement prior to applying.
2. Young Professionals
The Young Professionals stream is for those who have a job offer from a Canadian employer. Under this stream, participants receive an employer-specific work permit, meaning they can work for only one employer in Canada during their stay.
3. Working Holiday
One of the most popular streams, Working Holiday provides participants with an open work permit, allowing them to work for any employer in Canada. This stream offers flexibility and the opportunity to work in various industries across the country. Typically, permits under this stream are valid for up to two years.

What Happens After You Receive an Invitation to Apply?
Once an applicant receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA), they have 20 days to submit a complete work permit application through their IRCC online account. Participants must ensure that they submit all the required documents, such as proof of job offers (for specific streams), health insurance, and other supporting materials within this time frame.
Arrival in Canada: What You Need to Know
After successfully applying and receiving their work permit, IEC participants must come prepared when they enter Canada. Upon arrival, they will need to present their passport and a Port of Entry (POE) Letter to Canadian immigration officers. In some cases, participants may also need to provide proof of the following:
- Sufficient Funds: IRCC advises that participants show a bank statement with at least $2,500 to cover initial living expenses for the first three months. The bank statement should be dated no more than one week before departure.
- Valid Health Insurance: Proof of health insurance covering the entire duration of their stay in Canada is required.
- Return Ticket or Proof of Funds for a Ticket: Participants must either have a return ticket or show they have sufficient funds to purchase one.
- Failure to provide these documents may lead to delays or issues upon entering Canada. Additionally, IRCC recommends participants keep digital and paper copies of all relevant documentation during their travels.
Why Choose International Experience Canada?
International Experience Canada offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience life in Canada while gaining professional work experience. Whether you’re exploring the beauty of Canadian landscapes or building connections in various industries, the IEC program provides a foundation for personal and career growth.
Canadian employers also benefit from this program as it allows them to tap into a global talent pool of skilled, motivated, and youthful workers. This cross-cultural exchange enriches the Canadian economy and workplace diversity.
Moreover, for Canadian citizens, the program offers the reverse—allowing them to experience working and living abroad in participating countries like Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Ireland, and many others.
Eligibility and Key Requirements
To participate in the International Experience Canada program, applicants must meet several key requirements, including:
- Age: Between 18 to 35 years old (or 18 to 30, depending on the country).
- Citizenship: Must be a citizen of one of the over 30 countries that have a Youth Mobility Agreement with Canada.
- Financial Requirements: Demonstrating enough funds to support initial living costs in Canada (at least $2,500).
- Health Insurance: Participants must have insurance covering their entire stay in Canada.
- Valid Passport: The passport should be valid for the duration of the stay in Canada.
