Are forks illegal in Canada? No, they are not. While there are some restrictions on knives and other sharp objects, forks are not among them.

This may come as a surprise to some people, as the myth of the Great Canadian Fork Fight of 1912 has long been circulated online. But it’s just that – a myth. The truth is that Canada is looking to ban all single-use plastic materials by 2022, a move that will undoubtedly include forks and spoons.

Where did this rumour start?

In 2020, there was news floating around that Canada had prohibited forks since they are considered weapons. A video on TikTok spread the news that using forks is prohibited in Canada, and they aren’t available for purchase in stores or on Amazon. The video claimed that the ban came about as a result of the Great Canadian Fork Fight of 1812. But this is far from the case, and no such fights occurred.

The video misinterpreted the 2020 announcement by the Environment and Climate Change Minister about banning single-use plastic. Plastic forks, being single-use items, are included in the list. Other items include plastic utensils, plastic straws, checkout plastic bags, plastic aluminium can ring carriers (six-pack racks), stir sticks and takeout ware with plastics that are hard to recycle (food containers). This single-use plastic ban is part of Canada’s goal to achieve zero plastic waste by 2030.

Why can't we prohibit the use of all plastics?

The fact is that humanity cannot simply give up all use of plastic, but it doesn’t mean that individuals can’t modify their behaviour. People may make a simple change by reducing their usage of plastic and adhering to correct recycling procedures. Taking these steps will not only help the environment but also make your life more sustainable.

Every year, Canadians dump three million tonnes of plastic waste, as reported by Environment and Climate Change Canada. 91% of this trash is not recycled.

In November 2021, the federal government said that final regulations would take effect sometime in 2022. There will be a transition period for the businesses to adjust to the ban.
